The Attraction of Antique Furniture

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Often, when we think about antiques, we think about furniture. Of all the areas of antique collection, furniture products are probably the best known and one of the most popular. Why is antique furniture so prized? What makes it such a popular aspect of the antique collection landscape?

There are a few reasons why furniture is such a coveted collectible. Initially, it gives one a very unique way of interacting with history. having ancient manuscripts may be a great way of learning about the past, but furniture is a bit more “tactile”, and clearly present.

Old documents find their resting place in a safe or some other carefully designed means of protection. Furniture, on the other hand often finds its way directly into living rooms and parlors for all to see (and, often use) on a regular basis. This creates a living connection between the collector and the past that other antiques cannot always reproduce. This renders antique furniture a very popular collectible.

Additionally, the very nature of furniture and the motivations behind its original construction make it an attractive collectible. Furniture, even the most ornate of pieces, was generally constructed with function in mind. As such, the artisans who produced it took great care to create items that would stand up to frequent use and that would survive regular contact. This attention to function gives furniture longevity.

As such, we can still find furnishings today that were made centuries ago and are still capable of being used. It is a sturdy collectible that stands the tests of time, making it more available than some other antiques.

Finally, furniture was made with the assumption that it would be seen and because of this, chairs would be a centerpiece to a parlor. A desk would be visible to all who entered a den or office. As such, the makers of furniture strived for a recognizable and pleasing aesthetic when crafting their work. The end result was items that communicated the time’s ideals of beauty and craftsmanship. Generally, these aesthetic preferences can still be appreciated today. Furniture brings with it a unique beauty in combination with its lasting function.

Collecting antique furniture does pose some difficulties. It is often a relatively expensive pursuit (particularly with respect to high-demand items). It can also be a hobby that requires a fair amount of space! A collection of political pins may only occupy a single dresser drawer, whereas a furniture collection may comprise an entire home’s furnishings!

However, it is a very popular and very rewarding area of the antique collection milieu and deserves a great deal of specific attention. In this ebook, we will address some basic concerns for furniture collectors, while also providing a closer look at some of the more popular furniture items collectors covet today.
