Getting the Right Gear for Golf

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Like any other sport, golf requires that you are geared up correctly to be able to properly play the game. Here, I will give you an idea of basic golf equipment that’s required to be able to learn and play golf.

For starters, the basic golf equipment is a golf ball. Golf balls are small dimpled balls. The dimpling is to enable the ball to travel farther when hit or ‘driven’ by golf clubs. The balls are placed on tee’s which are a small, pin like thing that you punch to the ground. The tee is use in teeing off (the start of your first drive) thus the name.

Another important piece of golf equipment is a golf club or golf driver. Golf drivers come in different varieties and are often bought often in sets, but are also available individually. Depending on the landscape, either sand, grass or cement, different golf clubs are required to make the proper drive. Professional golfers usually have a bag or two of golf clubs to cater to their needs.

To protect your equipment, a golf bag and club covers are essential. A golf bag will, of course, hold your golf clubs in one place and make it easier for you to carry around your variety of clubs. Golf bags also hold golf balls and other equipment like water bottles to quench your thirst, or an extra shirt or your regular shoes. Golf club covers protect the edge of your golf club from unwanted scratches and dents. Damaged clubs can affect the drive of your golf ball.

One thing worth investing in is a good pair of specialty shoes. Golf shoes are different from usual rubber shoes or walking shoes and are designed to walk on greens. They usually have pointed rubber under the soles to grip the earth or sand under your feet and stop unnecessary shaking or moving. Golf is a sport that requires walking from one hole to another or to where your ball has landed (you can not use golf carts on the greens), so choose a pair that is sturdy yet comfortable enough for you to walk in.

The most amazing golf equipment ever created (for me, that is) is the golf cart. Golf carts are used to ferry you from one hole to the other, and although they are not allowed on the greens, they still lessen the burden of having to walk under the hot sun carrying a heavy golf bag. They can usually be borrowed from golf courses.

Golf equipment is available from sporting and specialty stores and from golf clubs. The internet is also a good source. Second hand equipment is even auctioned off the internet, if you are on a tight budget.
